Technology has transformed almost every part of our lives — and dentistry is no exception. And honestly? That’s a good thing.

Because for a very long time, dentistry has had a reputation for painful or uncomfortable procedures (think sticky impression trays, heavy lead vests for X-rays), and long waits between treatment appointments. Unfortunately, many patients still associate dental care with discomfort simply because that’s how it used to be.

Thankfully, a lot has changed. Today’s dental technology allows care to be more comfortable, precise, safe, and efficient — often with better long-term results. At our practice, we invest in modern dental technology for one simple reason: to provide better care and a more positive experience for our patients.

Why Technology Matters in Dentistry

Dental services must consider many aspects of overall patient care – this is where dental technology plays a role. Technology supports and improves comfort during appointments, increases accuracy and precision, extends the lifespan of dental work, and often reduces the need for repeat visits or repairs over time. In other words, better tools help us plan and provide better care, with fewer surprises along the way.

Even when patients don’t see the technology at work, they often feel the difference. Appointments tend to be smoother, restorations fit better, and treatment plans are more predictable. From our perspective, it also allows our dental team to work with greater confidence, knowing we’re using tools that support our training and skill.

The Digital Technologies We Use

We offer several advanced dental technologies to support patient care. While these options are available to patients from both our St. Clair and Scollard practices, the technology itself is located at our Scollard office. This simply means that if a treatment requires specific equipment, your care would take place there.

Below are a few examples of how technology shows up in everyday patient care.

Sedation Dentistry

While not a piece of equipment on its own, sedation dentistry is an advanced clinical service that can dramatically change a patient’s experience.

Dr. Brown is licensed to provide sedation dentistry, which helps patients feel relaxed and at ease during both routine and more complex procedures. Depending on the situation, sedation can range from mild (such as nitrous oxide) to deeper levels of relaxation. You are never fully unconscious — most patients describe the experience as feeling like a light daydream or a very restful nap.

For patients who feel anxious about dental visits, sedation can make care feel far more manageable and comfortable.

Same-day Ceramic Restorations & Digital Impressions

Traditionally, getting a dental crown meant two appointments spread out over a few weeks — one to prepare the tooth and take impressions, and another to place the final crown once it returned from a dental lab.

With our CEREC system, we can often complete this process in a single visit. Using advanced computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), we design and create custom ceramic restorations — such as crowns, veneers, inlays, and onlays — right in the office.

CEREC also allows us to take digital impressions, replacing traditional impression trays. Instead of biting into sticky putty, a small handheld scanner captures a highly accurate digital image of your teeth. The result is a more precise fit, fewer adjustments, and often less sensitivity after treatment.

For patients, this typically means fewer appointments, less time away from work or family, and a smoother overall experience. A win all around!

Modern Dental Imaging

When X-rays are needed, we use advanced imaging technology designed to be fast, informative, and non-invasive.

Depending on the clinical need, we may use a panoramic (Panorex) X-ray, which rotates around the head to capture a single, comprehensive image of the teeth, jaws, and sinuses in about 15–30 seconds. This broad view helps us identify issues such as impacted teeth, bone loss, jaw concerns, or other abnormalities.

For more detailed planning, we may recommend a Cone Beam CT (CBCT) scan. This is a 3D X-ray that provides highly detailed images of teeth, jawbones, nerve pathways, and surrounding structures — all in just seconds.

Both options use significantly lower radiation than older imaging systems and allow us to diagnose more accurately while planning treatment conservatively.

3D-Printed Night and Mouth Guards

If you grind or clench your teeth, or play sports, you’ve likely needed a night guard or mouth guard.

Traditionally, custom guards required multiple appointments and a wait of one to two weeks. With our SprintRay Pro-2 3D Printer, we can create custom-fit night guards and mouth guards in a single appointment and often under one-hour.

A digital scan captures your bite, an AI-assisted design ensures precision, and the printer produces a strong, durable guard that fits comfortably. The result is fewer follow-up adjustments, better durability, and a guard you’re more likely to wear consistently due to proper fit.

It’s Not Just About Dental Tech

Technology is only as good as the training behind it. We believe strongly that equipment alone doesn’t create great dentistry — people do.

That’s why we invest heavily in continuing education. Our team regularly pursues advanced training to learn safer, more effective, and more comfortable ways to care for patients. In some cases, this education has taken our team beyond Canada. We’ve completed specialized training in non-invasive gum rejuvenation techniques in California, as well as advanced training in Portugal focused on modern alternatives to traditional bridges and dentures.

These investments ensure that whether or not we use technology, our treatments are provided thoughtfully and skillfully, and always in service of better patient care.

A Final Thought

When we invest in dental technology, we’re investing in your comfort, your experience, and your long-term oral health. We don’t believe in overtreatment, and we don’t use tools simply because they exist. Technology is there to support your care: it helps us do our jobs better, but it never replaces listening, explaining, and taking the time to make sure you feel comfortable with your recommended treatment plan.

If you’re a current patient, we always welcome questions about any technology you see or hear about during your visit. And if you’re considering joining our practice, we’re happy to explain how we approach care and how we can support your dental needs.
